LoLLapALoOzA 2008

Friday, August 1st

Originally started in 1991 by Perry Farrell, a singer in the rock band Jane's Addiction, Lollapalooza was a music festival meant to be a "farewell" for him and the band. It was such a hit that it ran every year until 1997, but was revived again in 2003. It was originally a touring festival but finally declared Grant Park, Chicago it's base, where it has remained for the past five years. This weekend festival features not only top-charted bands, but up and coming bands who come from coast to coast. This three-day music festival is known for bringing big name bands to the heart of Chicago every summer. Not to mention the fact that it is always the hottest day of the year, it makes no difference, though, because people come for the music.

It was my first time experiencing Lolla. I didn't quite know what to expect, I mean I have seen it on the news before---coverage from downtown and clips of a few of the artists. But, to be there to live and breath (and sweat) it for a whole day---was inexplicable. The number of people that attended was unimaginable, and the headliner bands across the whole park was unreal. Who would have thought to create such a festival that draws people in from across the country and the world to listen to music?

It's interesting if you think about it.
These people were there for the music, well and to be honest--the free promo items such as the Vitamin Water or iTunes gift cards and especially the XRT red draw string bags. But it really was all about the music. It amazes me to know there are so many people out there that support these artists, big or small, at every chance they get. I met a couple from Ontario who decided to buy a three day pass (which is rather expensive) just to see one band. One band? For over $100 for the weekend? Really? Yes, really. They were big fans of this band and were proud they finally made it on the "big stage".

People like this reassure me that music is still a powerful element in today's society.  The idea that traveling to another country (sure Canada is just on the other side of this cheese state) is a remarkable statement for what people will do to support something they admire and appreciate. Some of the artists included Dierks Bentley, Duffy, Kanye West, Wilco, The Black Keys, Marc Ronson, Radiohead, John Butler Trio, MGMT and the Black Kids.

I had a great time working Lolla, even though it was well above 100 degrees and everyone was sweating like no tomorrow! I had the opportunity to experience one of the greatest and largest music festivals of the summer.

This event was a key component in promoting our station. Because other local radio stations were there, we had to be keen on what were doing to draw attention to our area. Our XRT LOUNGE offered a cool place to re-fuel with shaded chairs, a misting fan, a few bean bag sets and a central location to relax near the main stages. Our free XRT giveaways included the drawstring bags, can koozies, iTunes gift cards and bumper stickers. Our lounge was the perfect place to relax, listen to some tunes and hang out with friends.

Nonetheless it was a fun-filled day and an enjoyable experience. I even got to see a few of the bands play... for free! I can't wait to do it again next year!
