The Taste of Randolph is a mini-version of the Taste of Chicago. From the music to the food, to the people passing through, this street festival, "appeals to a slightly more refined palate and lives up to its reputation as the best culinary and music festival" of the summer in the neighborhood. This more upscale and appealing street festival attracted over 30,000 people to indulge in the neighborhood's finest foods and beverages, as well as view art from local and world wide merchants. Sponsored by Miller Lite and Bank of America, WXRT had a tent set up in the heart of the six-block stretch of the festival somewhere between on Randolph between Racine and Peoria.
I was assigned to work two days of the Taste of Randolph. Although it was barely a two mile mile for me from my train station, I enjoyed everything about this weekend. This neighborhood is
Mike Doughty's Band, Mike Costa and Drive-By Truckers were among the headliners for the weekend entertainment. I enjoyed listening to The Everyday Visuals on Sunday during my shift. This Indie-pop-folk group lightened the hot day and cloudy overcast. Their free-spirited music reminds me of John Mayer's bluesy tunes. I spent the day listening to great music, visiting with listeners and sipping on R.W. Knudsen Sparkling water.
Our tent featured a 93XRT navy blue table cloth with lots of "swag". I didn't know what this word meant until today...goes to show you that you learn a little something new each day. Our table offered three different t-shirts for sale and we also had a lot of free stuff to give away. The "swag" included XRT can koozies, buttons, CD samplers, a raffle to win concert tickets, Fisher's nuts and R.W. Knudsen's beverages (no worries--no alcohol in these!).
The day sailed by smoothly as the interns, Zack (Promotions Assistant) and I took turns challenging XRT listeners and Taste of Randolph goers in a few games of bean-bags. During the afternoon, I couldn't help but sample some of Randolph's finest foods. I found an Italian beef (you can never go wrong with a Chicago style Italian beef) and I couldn't pass up the chance to indulge the chocolate covered strawberries with Anna(intern).
It has barely been a month since I started working with XRT. The four interns and Zack and I shared our stories of how we got the internship with this radio station. I told everyone that I thought Lauren (Promotions Assistant) was intimidating and I feared I wouldn't get the internship because the interview was nerve-racking! A few of the others felt the same way, but Zack reassured us that were among the top 20 out of over 100 that applied for the position.
After our discussion and a lengthy conversation with a free-lance journalist about global warming, I ventured back to the Metra station to head home. It was a fun, entertaining and overall great day!
